The Vatican City Vacation
When
you travel to Italy one of the most popular destination of course is the
Vatican City. Here is something I am sure you did not know. Vatican City has
its own sovereign state which means they have their own rules and its own
governing system independent of the Italian system. Also it is the smallest
independent state in the whole entire world with only a little over 100 acres
of land area. It was formed in 1929 under an agreement between the Kingdom of
Italy and the Holy See. The Holy See is the central governing system of the
Catholic Church which is headed by the Pope himself. The official residence of
the Pope is visited by millions of people each year.
Once
you arrive to the Vatican City you can enter through the famous St. Peter’s
square. The beautiful architecture from the 1600’s is truly breath taking.
While you are in St. Peter’s square make sure to visit St. Peter’s Basilica. It
is the most visited building in the Vatican City and this church’s dome can be
seen for miles around Rome. St. Peter’s Basilica can seat 60,000 people and it
is said it is the largest church in the world. It is famous for being the
burial site of St. Peter which is said to be the founding father of the
Catholic Church making him the first Bishop of Rome. The tomb was announced in
1950 after a decade of archaeological research.
It
is said that the Catholic tradition that St. Peter is buried under the altar of
this Basilica and all the Popes have been buried there as well including the
most recent Pope John Paul II in April 2005. At the very entrance of Basilica
is the statue of Jesus, St. John the Baptist and the other 11 apostles. Anyone
can visit Basilica for free so long as that you are properly dressed meaning no
bare shoulders or knees. You can also attend mass on Sunday if you wish.
You
will also want to visit the largest museum in the world also located in Vatican
City. With 1400 rooms of galleries that represents more than 3000 years of art,
it is pretty sure there is something for everyone who visits. The Sistine
Chapel is found in the Vatican City which is known for being the private chapel
for the cardinals when electing for a new Pope.
The
very best way to take in all the sights that the Vatican City has to offer is
through the many guided tours that are available from half a day tour to as
long as you wish. There are tours for museums only or for all the important
places of interest in the Vatican City. All is truly up to you what you want to
do while you visit the Vatican City.
Here is a really great video thanks to Rick Steves from
ricksteves.com giving a documentary and tour of the Vatican City.
